Amnesty International global report on death sentences and executions 2024
The information gathered by Amnesty International on the use of the death penalty worldwide in 2024 reports 1,518 executions recorded during the year, which represents an increase of 32% compared to the 1,153 executions recorded in 2023.
Amnesty International’s figures on the global use of the death penalty in 2024 showed a sharp increase in recorded executions, while the number of executing countries remained at a record-low point. Amnesty International recorded a 32% rise in known executions from 2023, bringing the 2024 total to the highest yearly figure since 2015. The spike was driven primarily by increases in three countries – Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia
