Amnesty International’s figures on the global use of the death penalty in 2024 showed a sharp increase in recorded executions, while the number of executing countries remained at a record-low point. Amnesty International recorded a 32% rise in known executions from 2023, bringing the 2024 total to the highest yearly figure since 2015. The spike was driven primarily by increases in three countries – Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia
