The Freedom Prize invites young people from 15 to 25 years old from Normandy, other French Regions and all over the world to choose eache year a person or an organisation fighting for freedom. Amongst its highlights, the Freedom Prize propose a call to applications in order to be part of the international panel of judges from 15 to 25 years old who will gather on 14 and 15 February 2020 in Normandy to determine the three finalists of the Freedom Prize 2020.

Two days of deliberations in Normandy

Open to 24 young internationals aged 15 to 25, this jury will meet on Friday 14 February and Saturday 15 February 2020 in Normandy to examine all the commendable fights for freedom submitted via the call for proposals “Our Freedom Prize 2020”, to deliberate and to select  the 3 finalists of the Freedom Prize 2020. An online vote open from 9th March to 6th June2020 will decide between them and determine the winner of the second Freedom Prize.

During two days, the deliberations will be supervised and moderatedby the International Institute for Human Rights and Peace, with activities based on the respect of the opinion of others and mobilizing skills such as the ability to work in a team and argumentation.

Conditions to apply:

  • Be between 15 and 25 years of age during the two days of deliberations;
  • Be able to express yourself orally and in writing in French or English;
  • Send the application form accompanied by a C.V. to prixliberte@normandie.fr by 17 November 2019 at the latest.

Discover of Normandy and participate in the 2020 Freedom Prize Ceremony

The international jury of the Freedom Prize will gather in Normandy (France) from Wednesday 12 to Tuesday 18 February 2020. In addition to the deliberations, this trip will be an opportunity for all members of the jury to meet and discover various emblematic sites of the Norman heritage, including highly symbolic places for the fight of freedom, through organized visits.

All costs for transport, accommodation and meals will be covered by the organisers.

The members of the jury will also be invited to the Freedom Prize award ceremony that will take place in Caen (France) as part of the Normandy World Peace Forum in on October 2020.

Flashback to the international panel of judges for the 2019 Freedom Prize

The international juryfor the 2019 Freedom Prize was composed of 30 young people aged 15 to 25 selected from 63 applications, including 11 from Normandy, 7 from other regions and 12 from the following countries: Brazil, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Canada, Jersey (UK), Macedonia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mauritania, United States.

Meeting in Normandy from 4 to 10 February 2019, the members of the panel began their stay by (re)discovering Normandy's heritage, visiting the D-Day landing beaches, the Caen Memorial, Mont Saint-Michel, Le Havre and Honfleur.

On 8 and 9 February, the panel met at the Abbaye aux Dames in Caen for two days of deliberations under the chairmanship of the artist and United Nations digital ambassador YAK (Yacine Ait Kaci).

After several sessions of brainstorming, debate and selection, three finalists were selected from among all the people and organisations presented during the call for application: the Saudi blogger Raif Badawi, the Chinese photojournalist Lu Guang and the Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.
