Emmanuel Ruben was born in Lyon in 1980. A former student of the École Normale Supérieure and INALCO, and a certified geography teacher, he has made numerous trips to Eastern Europe and the Middle East. He is the author of a dozen books – geopolitical novels, survey reports, essays at the crossroads of art, literature and geography – which question the borders of Europe in landscapes and on maps. In September 2014, his novel La Ligne des glaces (The Ice Line), the first episode of a European series, was selected for the Prix Goncourt. In June 2016, he undertook a bicycle trip across Europe, from Odessa to Strasbourg. Sur la route du Danube (On the Danube Road), a story inspired by this journey, published in 2019, won the Nicolas-Bouvier Prize, the Amerigo-Vespucci Prize, the Grand Prix Sport & Littérature and the Amic Prize from the Académie française. From September 2017 to December 2021, he directed the Maison Julien Gracq, a cultural centre located on the banks of the Loire between Nantes and Angers, which hosts writers and artists from around the world. In 2021, his novel Sabre won the Prix des Deux-Magots. In August 2022, Stock will publish his novel Les Méditerranéennes, and Points Seuil will publish his previously unpublished Ukrainian short stories. He is currently editing a collective volume of Ukrainian authors, entitled Hommage à l'Ukraine, which will be published in October 2022 by Stock in the La Cosmopolite collection.
