At the crossroads of environmental and security emergencies, what role does Europe play on the global stage?
The year 2025 marks a major turning point in the global geopolitical context, largely impacted by the new orientations of the Trump administration. At a time when certainties regarding peace and security are deeply challenged, climate and environmental issues seem to be relegated to the background. The failure of the negotiations in Busan on the treaty against plastic pollution and the difficulties in achieving concrete results at the climate COPs illustrate that, in terms of environmental matters as well as conflict prevention, the UN-based multilateral system shows its limits. In this context, the new tensions emerging around the fight for the exploitation of certain metals and rare earths reflect the many interconnections between climate and geopolitical issues. Faced with this new situation, is Europe able to assert itself as a leading player on the global stage?
