Alice Syrakvash was born on 7 August 1983 in Zhytomyr, Ukraine, to a Belarusian father and a Ukrainian mother. She considers herself Belarusian.
In August 2001, shortly after her 18th birthday, she volunteered for the presidential campaign of Vladimir Gontcharik, an opponent of Lukashenko. At the end of the campaign, she joined the team of independent observers for the presidential election.
During her work, she witnessed electoral fraud, documented it and, with the help of her colleagues, submitted the evidence to the court, after which she was prosecuted by the Belarusian authorities.
She was nevertheless able to complete three years of university studies at the European Humanities University in Minsk before it was closed down by the Lukashenko regime.
In autumn 2004, after the referendum on constitutional change, which removed the two-term limit on presidential mandates, and under the new threat of arrest, she decided to leave Belarus. She sought refuge in France at the age of 21.
In France, she trained as a video journalist and worked for two years at TéléAlsace. Following the closure of the channel, she moved to Paris and learned another profession, audiovisual colour grading, which she currently practises.
Since her arrival, she has organised rallies in 2006, when most of her friends were imprisoned for their opposition to Lukashenko, as well as in 2010 and 2011, when part of her family ended up in prison. She took up the torch again in August 2020, creating the Association of Belarusians in Paris and the Belarusian People's Embassies initiative, which she continues to coordinate.
